Greater Chicago Food Depository
Volunteer Session
Wednesday, January 18
12:15 – 4:00 p.m. (Lunch at 12:15 p.m.)
Please sign up at your local participating Regional Center
Who We Are
As Cook County's food bank, the Greater Chicago Food
Depository distributes more than 40 million
pounds of food each year. A large portion of this food must
be inspected or sorted and then packaged before it
can be safely distributed through a network of 600
member agencies (food pantries, kitchens, shelters, etc).
Volunteers complete much of this work. Frequent projects
involve re-packaging bulk cereal or pasta, sorting bread or
canned food donations, or cleaning produce
Requirements
Dress: Volunteers must wear long pants and
closed shoes with non-skid soles.
You will not be permitted to work in the warehouse
if you are wearing sandals or shorts/skirt.
What To Expect
Orientation: Before working, we provide a brief
orientation for all new volunteers. We will talk
about poverty and hunger in Chicago, how the
Food Depository functions, who we serve, and
answer any questions you may have
about our
operation. Work Session: You will spend the
majority of the session repacking food in
the
warehouse. Groups will be given the option of taking
a short break halfway through a three hour session.
Volunteers must be able to stand for up to 90 minutes
while doing some light lifting and bending.
What To Bring?(Optional)
We ask that each volunteer bring an item of canned
or non-perishable food to donate. A list of most
needed food items is available upon request.
We encourage volunteers not to bring personal
belongings to the facility; however, a limited
number of lockers are available if needed.

"A JOURNEY THROUGH FOREVER" (New)
Fridays, January 6 through April 12
12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
"Journey Through Forever"
is a musical
written by the legendary Oscar Brown, Jr. It
is about the trials and tribulations of the
aging process. This satirical view of aging
("I messed around and got old") brings
everyone into the story as they recognize
some of the stages, processes, and
moments of stages and appreciation. The
mission of Africa P. Brown, his daughter, is
to engage us, seniors, in a theatrical
improvisation that will use exercise and
movement through dance and staging, and
strengthening memory through learning song
and dialogue. The 15-week program will
culminate in a theater-style production to be
performed in front of participant friends,
peers and family. Brought to you by Isis-
Edutainment, Africa P. Brown and Nyassa Bossette. FREE |
