"Ella Could Scat"
Ella was mellow,
When I listened to
Her sounds, I
Became a happy
Fellow. She could
Scat like that, like that
She could scat like that. She
Went, she went shebedo,
Shebedo, shebedo, bluedo,
Bluedo, be down, be down,
Be down, be profound, be
profound, be profound.
Ella was national and
international, she was universal,
She was jazz, she complemented
The band, she had the
Best voice in the land.
Ella could sang, she,
Could do her thang, Ella was
Jazz, she was scat, she
Could scat like that, like that
She could scat like that, she could
Scat. She could scat, scat, scat
Like that, she could scat.

| "We Must Protect Our Children" |
We must nurture the children
we must protect the children
we must give the children support and confort
we must create an educational atmosphers
so that the children
can learn new skills to grow and flow spiritual, in love
in African history in world geography economic politics
creative motif poetry and how to become positive adults
in our communities and we must
continuously generate enthusiasm to the children
we must prepare the children for global affairs and the future
we must listen to the children cries
we must comfort them in the times of their fears and tears
We must expose the children to other ethnic groups
through socialization education
recreation and dedication for mental
spiritual and social liberation
we must protect our children from drugs and violence
we must save our children
so that the ancestors can survive and stay alive |

| "Her Eyes" |
She wears a mark of
sanity, but in her
eyes I see a historical
struggle that she is
trying to maintain her
sanity to avert vanity.
In her eyes, I see sadness,
madness and she is
crying out for help. In
her eyes, lonely arms
reaching out to be embraced
and beginning to be touched
with compassion. In her
eyes I see a history of
pain, confusion and
delusion and search
of reality, she wonders if
life is a fallacy. She
is caught up in a
schizophrenic mishap.
I pray that God will free
her wretched soul, mind and
body holistically. |

"Observation" |
The mother tree stood
in our front yard
surrounded by the
tall grass, she stood
on one large leg
With her arm stretched
toward the sky.
The rings around her
beautiful body told her age.
She changed colors in all seasons.
In the spring she was green,
in the autumn she was brown and
in the winter she was gray.
The playful squirrels
ran up her leg
laughing continuously.
I loved her benevolent
smile especially her style,
some time she would bend,
but never break in the wind,
she was God's creation
that brought in salvation,
I love her platonically
platonically, I love he,
platonically.

"AN ODE TO DOCTOR DANIEL HALE WILLIAMS
AND PROVIDENT HOSPITAL" |
On Friday 29 November 02
In the late afternoon
I saw the last of the
Old Provident Hospital
Scattered out in bricks
Where she once stood
Proudly saving human lives
Now she will
Be no more
They tore down Dr. Daniel Hale Williams
Medical house where he performed
The first successful open heart
Surgery of the world
They tore down history
They tore down yesterday's memories
They tore down black progress
They tore down the first
Black Hospital of the world
The future young black generation
Will miss the old Provident building
That could have been turned into
A black medical museum but
They tore it down to the ground
The children will never see Doctor
Daniel Hale Williams medical staff
Or their pictures
They tore down yesterday's memories
They tore down possibilities
They tore down the past
The children wanted history to last

"JAZZ RAP"
I rap with substance
I create, educate, donate, stimulate and elevate the minds to design
I activate words into rhythms
That rhyme with time
Life can be a grind
But what I say is no Crime
My words come in nines
I was touched by the divine
I am genuine
I lay it on the line
I don't do it blind
I rap with substance
I spread history to the heart to eliminate the lead
From the dead head
I touch humanity to avert vanity
To prevent insanity
I make minds and souls whole and I keep them warm from the cold
Some people will say that I am bold
And some will say that I am always in control
I make them rotate, gyrate and gravitate to the spoken words
I spike the mike so that they can ride on my words like a bike
I rap in substance
I rap in substance
I rap in substance

"MY AFRICAN QUEEN"
(A poem for Leslie)
You are truly an
African queen
From the ancient
Nile with that
Beautiful smile,
I love your style, especially
Your profile
|
| |
|
|
When you walk in rhythm
You rhyme with time that
Simulate my mind.
Your beautiful spring summer eyes
Hypnotize and magnetize |
| |
My mind by your decision
You was touched by the
Creator from above in
Platonic love. You are sensuous.
You are the morning sun that rise
And set on the shores of my mind in the
Valley of serenity, for you have an affinity.
|
| |
|
| |
You create ecstasies in my
Dreams, you are beautiful
Memories of life that ward
Off strife, you cut into my heart
With love like a sharp knife.
|
| |
You never change you stay
The same, your name brings me fame.
You are the best, different from the rest.
Your attitudes are never rude. Your personality
Give light to reality. You are a beautiful
African queen the most beautiful woman
That I have ever seen,
You will always be in my dreams.

WHO AM I?
I am ancient, I was first on this earth,
And I cover the universe
Who am I?
I am older than the pyramids and the sphinxes
Who am I?
I am an African man, I am a black man,
I am a king and a Mandingo warrior. I am a mind that can design,
Develop, implement goals and objectives with a purpose.
Who am I?
I'm a husband, a father, a grandfather
Who am I?
I am a poet, a historian, a story teller and a Griot
Who am I?
Experiences, knowledge and wisdom
Who am I?
I'm the past, present and future.
Who am I?
I am spirituality, respect, discipline, patience, responsibility, trust
Morality, peace, parity and a child for God
A child of God,
A child of God,
And I am thankful for touching humanity with humility.
